The nightmare you speak is a full joy for a experienced cracker my brother,a true cracker will take the challenge greatly.
More powerfull protection , for them is challenge.There will not be a protection scheme impenetrable, not to bypasing the protection in various way.
I see a movie tutorial were is copying ASM code ,the whole registration and make with your own code a keygen.Fight that.
In the line of execution will expect the final serial which the software must compare with the dummy serial provided,or reconstruct the key file bit by bit and structure of the file.
The best way(in my opinion is black list every key thru update online.That is not economic because you have a full day blacklist every chei provided by update proces-this is the case of Kaspersky line of products.We have another way to protect(of course is not a mass software) launching a "satelite" from inside of main every time is open the software.I know is not the best way but registration scheme is intact every time.
Vladimir (Enigma) is a great programmer but even him know there is no 100% solution to guarantee protection.

Don't need to say "great programmer". Really he is a GREAT Programmer. Awesome!
